Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born in the hill-fort of Shivneri in 1627. 

He was the son of Shahaji Bhosle, a Maratha general under the service of the Sultan of Bijapur. Shivaji Maharaj was trained in the art of warfare from a young age and was known to be an excellent horseman and swordsman.

He was also an able administrator and was known for introducing many reforms in the Maratha kingdom. He was also a great patron of the arts and literature.

In 1643, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured the Torna Fort in the Pune district of Maharashtra. This was the first major victory in his campaign to establish the Maratha Empire. 


TORNA FORT



Torna Fort, also known as Prachandagad, is located in the Sahyadri range of Maharashtra, India. It is one of the most important forts in the history of the Maratha Empire and played a significant role in the rise of Shivaji Maharaj as a powerful ruler.

The Battle of Torna:


In 1643, Shivaji Maharaj decided to capture the Torna Fort, which was then under the control of the Bijapur Sultanate. Shivaji's army consisted of around 300 soldiers, and they started their march towards the fort from Raigad. The fort was defended by a garrison of around 200 soldiers.

Shivaji's army faced several challenges during the siege of the fort. They had to navigate through difficult terrain, including dense forests and steep hills, to reach the fort. The Bijapur soldiers were also well-trained and had a superior arsenal.
However, Shivaji's army was determined to capture the fort, and they launched a surprise attack on the garrison. They managed to breach the fort's defenses and engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the Bijapur soldiers. The battle lasted for several hours, but eventually, the Maratha army emerged victorious.

Aftermath:

The capture of Torna Fort was a significant achievement for Shivaji Maharaj, and it established his reputation as a formidable military leader. The fort's strategic location made it a valuable asset for the Maratha Empire, and it served as a base for several military campaigns in the region.
Shivaji Maharaj went on to capture several other forts in the Sahyadri range, including Rajgad, Sinhagad, and Purandar. These victories helped to expand the Maratha Empire and establish Shivaji's rule in the region.
