Chandrashekhar Azad was a prominent Indian freedom fighter and revolutionary who was active during India's struggle for independence. He was born on 23 July 1906 in Madhya Pradesh, India.



He was a prominent leader of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA), a revolutionary organisation dedicated to achieving independence from British rule through armed struggle. He is remembered for his courage, patriotism and dedication to the cause of India's freedom. Azad was actively involved in the Non-Cooperation Movement and the Salt Satyagraha of 1930-31 led by Mahatma Gandhi. He was an admirer of Bhagat Singh and together with him, Rajguru and Sukhdev, formed the HSRA in 1928. He was one of the main proponents of armed struggle and was instrumental in organising several revolutionary activities in North India. He was arrested in February 1931 and was imprisoned for life. On 27 February 1931, he was surrounded by the British police in Alfred Park in Allahabad. Refusing to surrender, he fought back and killed three policemen before being fatally shot. Chandrashekhar Azad (23 July 1906 27 February 1931) was an Indian revolutionary who reorganised the Hindustan Republican Association under the new name of Hindustan Socialist Republican Army (HSRA) after the death of its founder, Ram Prasad Bismil, and three other prominent party leaders, Roshan Singh, Rajendra Nath Lahiri and Ashfaqulla Khan. Azad was born to Pandit Sitaram Tiwari and Jagrani Devi in Bhabara village, in the present-day Alirajpur district of Madhya Pradesh. After being home-schooled in Hindi and Sanskrit, he joined the National College in Allahabad in 1920. He soon became involved in revolutionary politics and was arrested in 1921 for protesting against the British Raj. He escaped from jail and became one of the leaders of HSRA.

Azad dedicated his life to the cause of Indian independence and was determined to fight for it until his death. He was killed in an encounter with the British Raj police at Alfred Park in Allahabad in 1931. His death was mourned across India and he became a legendary figure among Indian revolutionaries.
